The Unexpected

“Know you could tumble any second. Then decide what to do with your time.” – Naomi Shihab Nye

It has been a very interesting 24 hours. I arrived home from work last night to find my husband opening windows and the fire alarm going. The house was full of smoke and he was trying to figure out where it was coming from. Very quickly we discovered smoke pouring out of a crack in one wall. It was scorching hot to the touch, and I could hear crackling when I put my ear close.

One call to 999, ten firemen, two fire trucks, one thermal imaging camera, and three and a half hours later, we were left standing alone in our house counting our blessings. (And not sleeping a wink!) We had had a chimney fire that had moved into the wall. Another few minutes and we would have had a serious fire, but luckily we, our things and our house are okay. All we have to show for the evening is a house covered in ash and soot and scorch marks on one wall and the edges of a carpet. The whole fire was contained within the wall. It was very very very scary, and we are shaken, but deeply grateful that the whole evening turned out as it did.

If I’m not here for a few days it’s because I am washing everything! I don’t mind though, I’m thankful that I have things to wash!

Wow, that sounds terrifying. How unusual things happened the way they did. It sounds like you are “watched over”, for certain. It is a big job cleaning up, I imagine the smell will linger for a while as well. Your gratitude is well placed. I would be counting my blessings as well.

Oh!! How grateful I, too, am that you have things to wash. How fast your heart must have beat when you saw your house. Thank God all is well & I will see you when are back. PS – Sometimes my house floods (I live in a flood plain, just a few feet from a city creek) and I just tell myself it is the only way the floors really get cleaned.

    Whew!

What a freak accident… who would’ve thought that something like that could happen?!
I hope you’ve caught up on some sleep after the cleanup :)

Oh no! poor things. How scary for the both of you. I’m really glad you guys are ok though. take all the time you need. Maybe a spa day is in order after you get everything clean? Or tequila shots to celebrate what you didn’t lose.

  15. Haley says:

Woah, what a lucky escape, I bet you’ve never been so glad to be washing up! Glad things haven’t gone too badly all things considered.

Gosh, Megg, I am so glad you and your husband are ok! What a nightmare. You had a guardian angel there beside you, I am sure of that. It just shows how easily something like this can happen, and how unsuspecting and trusting we are that these kind of things will never happen to us. I know it’s very cold over there right now, but open windows would help a lot with the smell. Soon spring will come and your house will be all fresh and clean again :) *big sigh of relief* Hugs, Kxo
