The best affirmation in the world.

I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you. – Roy Croft

IMGP0721 I have discovered a magic spell! I’m not kidding. For the past few years I have been reading a lot about affirmations. I’ve read that if you repeat certain things over and over again that it is possible to change your life. The trouble is, like anything else, it requires me to remember to do it! Then when I forget to affirm, instead of feeling like I am changing my life, I feel like I am somehow failing at something. Ugh.

But I have discovered a simple phrase that – when repeated often – really can be a magic spell. Rather than aimlessly repeating something over and over, this spell can be spoken whenever you hear those little (or large) voices of self-doubt. I am a worrier, and I have taken to whispering it to myself whenever I feel myself slipping into that old pattern and it really is changing my life.

What is it?

“I love you.”

Yup, that’s it. Sounds anticlimactic and a bit cheesy, doesn’t it? But it is seriously powerful stuff. Try it for a few days. Whisper or shout it out loud, or say it softly in your head whenever you feel yourself being negative or worrying or getting anxious. The key is remembering that you are speaking to the parts of yourself that are either a frightened little child or a fearful gremlin that is trying to keep you safe. By simply whispering “I love you” to yourself over and over again, you take away any room for worry, blame, self-loathing, and guilt. You separate yourself from the action and remind yourself that what you are doing is okay, and that you are loved. (And you are loved.) It is also powerful stuff to say in your head if it is someone or something that is bothering you. Nothing destroys fear and anger faster than love. And in the end isn’t love what we are looking for?

“I love you.”

Try it and see what happens. But I warn you: it’s powerful magic.

I think I may have just found the title for my new hand-bound journal: I love you. I’ll be reminded to say it to myself every time I see it. Thanks!

You know what? This is going to sound nutty…When I was younger, and I couldn’t fall asleep, or I was worried about whatever bad, crazy stuff was going on in my life or my family…I would say this to myself, in my head. I used to think maybe it was “inner me”, saying it to young me. Or my future love, saying it to me.

Either way it worked. You are right. It feels like hope. It feels like peace.

    :)
